Hamster treats

There are many treats your hamster will enjoy, which you can buy in pet shops, or just give them a small amount of vegetables or fruit. But bewarebecause if you give your hamster too many treats in one day, Your hamster could become ill. :(

Most hamster treats will say max. how many treats a day, and you should never exceed this.
For example, take yougurt drops:

These are great treats for your hamster. But it says on the back of the packet, no more than 1-3 drops a day. Up to 3 drops is plenty, so even if your hamster loves them, stick to their guidline for a healthy hamster.

5 ways to keep your pets healthy

Today I thought I would post something about a different animal, instead of just hamsters.
So, today I will be blogging about rabbits and guinea-pigs.

1: Make sure you clip your rabbit/guinea-pig's toe-nails regularly. If you don't it can cause discomfort for your pets. You should check their toenails to see if they need clipping about once a month. They should not be longer than a quarter of an inch, so cut them if they are longer. You can buy special pet nail clippers at most pet shops.

2: Give your guinea-pig/rabbit fresh food, like vegetables, or dandelion leaves. It is up to you how often you give them fresh vegetables, I used to give my rabbit and guinea pig fresh vegetables once a day. DO NOT feed them green beans, potatoes, beets, avocado, cabbage, sweet potato, corn, onion, rhubarb, cereals, or crackers, as this could make them ill.

3: Make sure you let your animals out in an outdoor cage to run around for while in the day, to let them stretch their legs. Don't keep them in their hutch where they sleep all day, as they won't have enough room to run around.

4: Make sure you refill your pets water at least once a week (though it is better to refill it once every 3 days). During the winter, as it starts to get colder, you should check if the water is frozen each day. If it is, make sure to replace the water. It is a good idea to buy something warm to put over your pets water bottle, as this will stop it from freezing. You can buy them in most pet shops.

5: Make sure you play with your pet! That may sound silly, but pets can get very lonely if they are not played with, especially if you only own one pet. It is better to keep 2 rabbits or 2 guinea-pigs, as then they will not get as lonely.

Hamster queries - Q's and A's

Harry the happy hamster :)

There are lots of commonly asked questions about hamsters, and how they are looked after etc. and I thought  that it might be helpful to put up some Q's and A's to help people who are not quite sure about some things when looking after a hamster. :)

If you would like to ask a question, and me put up your Q and A, just email
hblue88@gmail.com, and I will reply as soon as possible :)

Q: My hamster's not eating very much recently, is he/she ill, or just not hungry? What should            I do?
A: The best thing to do is take him/her to a vets. Also, is she drinking less too? Is she less energetic than usual? If she is then it is more likely that she is unwell, but even if she is still as energetic as always, and still drinking normally, it is still best to take her to a vets just in case. Even if the worst news is said, at least you will know you saved her the pain of whatever illness she may have had. I have had lots of hamsters before, and some have had illness and have had to be put down, and it is heart-breaking, but at least you know you have done the right thing.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Q: How much fresh fruit and vegetables can I give my hamster?
        What fruits/vegetables/foods can't I give her?
A: It is best not to give your hamster too many vegetables or fruit, as if you give them too much it can upset water balance, as vegetables have quite a high water content. I would recommend no more than twice a week, though I only give Lolly vegetables about twice a month. Grated carrot is a favourite of Lolly's. :) Give them a bit less than a tablespoon. DO NOT feed your hamsters tomato leaves, sweets made for humans, lettuce, citrus fruits, garlic, onions, pickles, raw kidney beans, baked bread or anything similar, salty foods, or raw potatoes.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Q: How often should I clean out my hamster's cage and how often do I feed her/change her
        water?

A: It is best to clean your hamster out once a week. If you wait longer than that, they can get very smelly, which is not nice for you or your hamster. You should feed her once a day, and change her water at least once every 3 days. Try to give her food at roughly the same time each day, it is better if you have a routine. (This is not overly-important, I just recommend it.) Her water should be in a drinking bottle, not in a bowl, as the water can easily get contaminated, and make your hamster ill if it is in a bowl.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Q: Can my hamsters share a cage?
A: Hamsters definately CAN NOT share a cage. This is very important, as if they share a cage, they will fight, and one is likely to kill the other. Sometimes hamsters even eat each other, so you have to be very careful.
Two cages next to each other would be fine, but just not sharing the same cage.
Just letting you all know, I will be on holiday from this Saturday to the 28th August, so I will not be on this blog, and there will not be an 'animal fact of the week' for a few weeks. Sorry. I am going to South Africa, so I will take lots of animal photos, and put them up on this blog later. I will also write a bit about some of the animals too, so watch this space!
Please help the animals!!!
Give animals a voice! RSPCA Animal Welfare Campaigns
PLEASE SUPPORT THE ANIMALS AT A TIME WHEN THEY NEED YOU MOST
There is a big animal welfare scare at the RSPCA, as the goverment are thinking of taking a step back for   animal welfare by weakening the controls on animal expreiments. If this act goes forward, it could result in much smaller inclosures for animals used for testing, less inspections (so a enclosure may not be checked for years), and some animals may even have to suffer long lasting severe pain, or even be killed by inhumane methods. This act would make the animals a lot more vunarable to animal cruellty.
Animals used for testing suffer enough already, despite the laws, but without them the standards will get worse, and the animals will be cruelly mistreated. NO animal deserves to be in that kind of pain.
Please help by joining the RSPCA's campaigne against weakening the UK's standards of animal welfare.
For more information, and how to join, please visit:
Getting a new hamster
Getting a new hamster ( or any pet! ) can be tricky.
One of the key things to remember, is to buy your pet from a TRUSTWORTHY pet shop.
If you don't, you may end up buying an ill hamster, and these can die in days after getting it.
You can buy lots of nice things for your hamster online as well.
You can also find many others by just searching pet shop online - but BE CAREFUL, make sure that this is a true site, not just a con!
Hope this helps you find your perfect pet and accessories!
